Movies: Rudolph

Intro

Hands down, my favorite television show during the holiday season is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. In the show, Rudolph is treated as an outcast by the other reindeer because of his red schnoz. Herbie, an elf who would rather study dentistry than make toys, is also treated as an outcast by the other elves. Feeling like misfits, Rudolph and Herbie run away together.

Dialogue

Dave:  Did you catch the Christmas specials the other day?

Kevin:  Yes, I did.

Dave:  I missed them. I was really looking forward to seeing Rudolph.

Kevin:  That’s one of my favorites. I think, I mean, that’s something I’ve watched for, now, almost thirty years – scary as that may be – and, um, it’s such a great show. It’s very fun.

Dave:  I love it. When he goes to the Land of Misfit Toys.

Kevin:  Filled with weirdos.

Dave:  Filled with weirdos.

Kevin:  Yeah, pretty much.

Dave:  But, in the end, he saves the day, right, with his glowing nose.

Discussion

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a coming-of-age story. Rudolph and Herbie learn to appreciate their individuality and realize that it’s okay to be different from everybody else. Maybe that’s why I like the show so much: it promotes diversity and says that it’s good to be unique.
