Quote
"We never let the cat out of the bag."

Former professional wrestler Superstar Graham, talking about being related to a famous promoter.

Meaning

tell a secret; make a secret known to others

Use

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been pretty secretive about their relationship. In January, however, they let the cat out of the bag and shared the news that Angelina is pregnant.

To let the cat out of the bag means to tell or reveal something secretive. For example, my girlfriend wants to know what I have planned for her birthday, but I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag. I don't want to ruin the surprise.

Examples

"I didn't want my sister to find out about her birthday surprise, but yesterday her friend let the cat out of the bag and told her she was getting a new bike!"
